Dear Parents,
Your child should have brought home a reading log on Friday, as well as a book in a zip-loc bag. This book was chosen by your child. The book can be used to fulfill the reading practice homework. The students are required to read 15 minutes four nights a week. These reading logs are due each Friday. If your child’s reading log gets lost, there is a copy you can download below, or you can record days read on a blank sheet of paper. Your child is also free to use library book or books from home to fulfill their reading minutes.
Some students like to partner with a parent when completing their reading minutes (child reads a page, parent reads a page), some enjoy reading aloud to others, and some like to read independently. These are all acceptable ways of practicing reading, and you may use the method that works best for your child and his or her skill level.
The numbers that are printed on the zip-loc bag indicate your child’s reading range. That describes the range of books that are ‘just right’ for their reading ability. Each child has taken the STAR reading test on the computer (the results are included in the bag for you to keep) to determine their approximate level. We will update these reading ranges throughout the year. You may also check a book’s range by going to the website ARbookfind.com and typing in the book’s title.
Thanks for your help in completing the weekly reading logs. When it comes to reading, the best advice is practice, practice, practice!
If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me at [email protected] , or contact me at school or through a note.
