As many of you are aware the third grade is when your child will begin taking state mandated standardized state tests. In the past the OAA, OAT, or PARCC were given in grades 3-8, however the tests being administered during the 2015-2016 school year will be different. Beginning this school year your child will be taking the state AIR test in math and reading. The AIR English Language Arts test will be administered in both the fall and spring, while the AIR math test will only be administered in the spring.
Third Grade Reading Guarantee
If you have not heard the phrase "third grade reading guarantee" I'm sure you soon will! The Third Grade Reading Guarantee is a new law in the state of Ohio that requires third graders in public schools – both district and charter – to meet a specified score on the state reading test in order to advance to fourth grade next year. Students will have two opportunities to pass the state reading test (AIR) during the school year and have up to two more opportunities to score high enough to be promoted to the fourth grade.
This school year:
The AIR tests and the Third Grade Reading Guarantee will inevitably become a hot topic in our classroom. It is my goal to do my best to ease the fears of my students while still making sure they are aware that the AIR is something to take very seriously. To help ease any fears you may be having I have gathered a few websites that help to inform parents more on the reading AIR as well as the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. Also, we will be working hard in the classroom to build comprehension skills that will not only aide students during this test, but also help them to be better readers. To go along with things we have/will be studying I have compiled a list of educational game websites your child may use to help. These games are all free and by no means a required assignment. If you have ANY questions feel free to email me!
Below here you will find a list of games and quizzes you may play/complete to help build your comprehension and vocabulary skills for the reading AIR. I LOVE doing centers that include online games like these, so don't be surprised if you see these again in class someday! I hope you enjoy :)
